Introduction
We’ve been operating Crypto/Bitcoin ATMs in Ireland since early 2018. We now have a network of Bitcoin ATMs across Ireland in Limerick, Galway, Cork, Dublin and Athlone. Our machines have exclusively sold Bitcoin, but we’re happy to announce that we have added Cardano (Ada) support to our network of ATMs in Ireland. It looks like we’re the first operator to add Cardano support, but more are sure to follow!
Where it began
We’re big supporters of Cardano and have been watching the project evolve since 2017. Shelley launched in July 2020 and this brought about community run stake pools on Cardano. We launched our own Mission Driven Pool (MDP) in September, called Cardano Abú (Ticker: CABU). It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. We also managed to mint a few blocks and donate some of our Ada rewards to charity along the way. We decided to migrate the pool to better infrastructure and harden the security, which took some time. We’re almost ready to accept delegates again and get back to minting some more blocks!
Cardano (Ada) Support in Bitcoin ATMs
We’ve been interested in adding Ada support to Bitcoin ATMs for quite some time and have been looking at different hot wallet and exchange options to see what was possible. We submitted a Catalyst proposal to add Cardano Ada support in the Bitcoin ATM software we use – the same software is also used in thousands of machines around the word. We narrowly missed out on funding in Catalyst Fund 2 and Fund 3. Check out the video with Queen Ada Staking for some background on that.
After discussions with IOHK (Cardano) and General Bytes (Bitcoin ATMs), it was suggested that the cardano-wallet, which runs in parallel with cardano-node, might be an ideal option for integration. The team at General Bytes completed the development to add an extension to the software for cardano node / cardano-wallet. We had a node already running, so we installed the cardano-wallet and connected it to the crypto ATM software. After some testing and bug fixing, we’re very happy to now offer Boinnex customers the ability to buy Ada with Cash.
